Statement of Intent - Draft

Statement of Intent For my pop music video, I am using the song 'Best of Me' by JOHN.k as its mellow vocals and the introduction of the beat later on in the song allow for a successful execution of a narrative video. I am planning to mimic the sound of the song through my domestic music video, apparent through the miss-en-scene, that demonstrates the breakdown of either a filial, sibling or romantic relationship, whilst adhering to the 16-25 demographic. Themes of gender inequality and ageing will be discussed in my video through the depiction of the relationship. I am producing, directing and editing a music video that advertises the song and artist. In order to target this demographic I plan on using conventional pop video tropes like bright lighting, relatable characters as well as intertextual references that my audience will be aware of and potentially find nostalgic. Regarding locations, I will create a 'lived-in', domestic world that will be emulated...

Key Elements & Checklist

Key Elements & Checklist Key Elements: Narrative > A music video that follows a storyline. Linear narrative follows a structure of beginning, middle and end like 'Thinking of You - Katy Perry'. A fragmented narrative is one that doesn't follow a storyline but depicts lyrics from the song. Performative > They focus on the artist or the band. There is no storyline but a collection of camera angles and movements. 'Love on Top - Beyonce' is the perfect depiction of this. Mixture > Some videos use a combination one both styles which is the style my one will follow.  The artist is featured within the video with the narrative elements acting as a form of 'B-roll'. This can be seen in 'Since You Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson'. The various different camera shots should be used to create variety and express character's thoughts and feelings further. T he camera never stays on one shot fo longer than 3-5 seconds which will be importa...

Analysis of Music Videos

Image
Analysis of Music Videos I have analysed Ocean Drive - Duke Dumont and When We Were Young - Lost Kings as they incorporate similar editing effects that I would like to use in my own video.  Ocean Drive is video about teenagers/young adults featuring a group of girl friends all hanging out with each other in different locations. There is no specific protagonist and no other social groups. It is set in summer and there are frequent shots of them driving around and the sea at night producing a feeling of freedom. The editing style is definitely something I would like to recreate as it has handwritten animated lyric annotation which adds a lot more depth to the video. A lot of slow motion is used in this video but when the lyrics speed up briefly so does the video. There is a range of camera shots with some of them panning and others more static adding more variety and allows you to say the same message but in a dissimilar way. I also like the colouring used as it makes everyt...

Pop Music

Pop Music Pop music tends to fairly short songs of about 2 to 4 minutes long consisting of verses and choruses. Typical tropes are a repeated chorus, hooks which are often short phrases or riffs and a melodic tune helping with its catchy nature. Lyrics often touch on life experiences, typically love and loss as well as other simplistic themes as both The Beatles and Taylor Swift discuss with their music. Pop music involves mass marketing and the use of social media means the audience have become actively involved in the production process and have a high level of influence. This careful crafting allows them to attract the mainstream masses. Pop music is a genre of popular music that consequentially occurred in the US and UK during the 1950’s as movement away from more orchestral sounds and the heavy focus of American rock and roll but still remains under evolution. These countries continue to dominate the Western music scene demonstrating the Westernisation and Americanisation o...

Perfect Audience Member

Image
Perfect Audience Member The demographic stated in the brief is 'a fun-loving 16-25 year old mass market demographic'. My video will attract this group of people with, firstly, the song which is distinct and pop coming from a more niche and under the radar artist. Due to this my target audience would be more urban and less mainstream, rejecting passive consumerism and so actively seeking out their own music meaning my target audience is more Leading Edge - Scenesters according to UK Tribes. The music they would listen to would be produced by smaller artists and production companies as well as music stemming from around the world with both serious and uplifting messages and a more indie sound to it whilst still being acceptable to be played on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. They would potentially more politically aware despite the simple love message of the song and as a result of being politically active they would most likely be ABC1...

Copyright of Track

Image
Copyright Unfortunately, I couldn't find any email address for Epic Records, the company to which the artists is signed, and so I messaged them regarding the copyright of the track on Facebook. The message I sent is as below: Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to you with regards to the copyright of the song 'Best of Me' by JOHN.k. As a media studies A-level student from England, I am required to direct, produce and edit a 3 minute long music video for a fictional pop artist with a range of camera shots, editing techniques, locations and representation of different social groups. It has to appeal a demographic of 16-25 year olds which I feel this song targets perfectly. I have chosen this song due to the emotion it portrays and the format of it with the introduction of a heavier beat allowing for great narrative and performative elements. The video itself will be shot over the summer and upon completion will be uploaded to a private YouTube channel allowing only my m...

Chosen Track

Image
Chosen Track Best of Me - JOHN.k 2min49 Why have I chosen this track? Although this track's full length is not 3 minutes, it will allow for more creative freedom either at the beginning or at the end of the video as I will be able to have, potentially, an establishing shot in silence to heighten the impact of camerawork and introduce the artist. The song has some instrumental parts which will be suitable for narrative elements in the video. The non-verbal aspects allow, again, for more creativity. The song also has the incorporation of a heavier beat further into the song which will allow for a climax in the storytelling to match the dynamic of the song. The artist's vocals are quite mellow and raw making it sound very emotional fitting with the theme discussed within the composition and providing it with depth. Why have I chosen this artist? JOHN.k is a very small artist with little media attention and so I want to demonstrate the importance of recognising more nich...

My Production Company

Image
Production company name - Silent Keys I have chosen this name as the adjective 'silent' is an antonym of music and 'keys' is regarded as forming the basis of any piece of music. The two juxtaposing words next to eachother prove interesting and unique in comparison to other music company names. Before deciding on 'Silent Keys', I thought about incoorporating the Greek God of music or entertainment which are Apollo, which is used a lot, and Dionysus, which may be difficult to pronounce. I was torn between 'Bacchus Acoustic' (Bacchus being the Roman name for Dionysus) and 'Silent Keys' but settled for the latter due to its fluidity and simple nature Logo -   T hese are the logos I created on Wix Logo Maker. I wanted a modern feel, something memorable and distinct which I feel these all portray. As the name itself connotes music and obviously portays the company's focus, I didn't feel the logo needed to explictly mention the purpose. ...
