Duran Duran

Duran Duran are an English pop-orientated rock band (a genre popular in the late 1970's) which formed in Birmingham in 1978. They were a highly successful group during the 80's but the changes to the music scene proved to be some opposition for them as an act. They have achieved 14 singles in the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the US Billboard Hot 100. Alongside this, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide and were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame highlighting their domestic and international success. To shed their intial perception of being part of the 'New Romantic' scene (a movement characterised by flamboyant and eccentric fashion), they marketed and styled themselves differently to create a refined and more elegant presentation. The time at which they formed saw the emerge of the 'video age' allowing Duran Duran to go mainstream. Videos they made were shot on 35mm film meaning that they could access a polished look atypical of the norm and later on the collaborated with professional film directors to enhance the quality even more. Live stadium shows of theirs witnessed the incorporation of video technology. The rapid rise to stardom, good looks and embracing of teen press was taken offence to by music critics and they were labelled as quintessentially manufactured and a throw-away pop group. Duran Duran have successfully still managed to build a rapport with Elton John and Kylie Minogue naming themselves fans of the band's style of pop. As of now, they have continued to make well-received music whilst acknowledging the relevance and importance of social media to promote new albums, their activities like the supporting tour and remains relevant to their diverse group of fans. This decade they have performed at the 2012 London Olympics and in 2015 released their 14th album, 'Paper Gods'.
